I'm going to get a Rosetta Stone course. Help me pick a language. These are kind of in order of my preference, but I'd like some input. This is what I'm using my tax refund on.

ETA: I've had 8 years of Spanish, 1 year each of German and Russian, and I've picked up a bit of Japanese. Also, dudes, if it's not on the list of courses, I can't very well take it. :( Klingon had crossed my mind, but it's not on the list.

I'm picking French, because if you learn French, I would too. (Probably not Rosetta Stone...I could try to find it somewhere...but something like it) I think it'd be a riot - we could blog in French to each other.

And we could taunt the silly English-types!

Admittedly I have a vested interest in picking Japanese, since I've considered the rosetta stone japanese course myself and I want to know what it's like :-)

Well, according to the description, it teaches not only speech and listening comprehension, but reading and writing as well. It would be pretty cool to watch un-dubbed anime without subtitles. :)

Also, Japanese and Russian are supposed to be as hard to learn non-natively as English, and with the non-Latin orthography, I figure if it can teach me one of these, it's very good.

Yeah, I had pretty much the same thought with the anime. That and I'd love to be able to get through a Kurosawa flick without subtitles also.

Yeah, I should have added that to the post, so I just ETA it. That's why Spanish isn't on the list.

I picked Japanese because it is, by far, the easiest language I have ever attempted to learn. I cannot, no matter how hard I try, get the grammar and conjugation correct in either Spanish or German. Japanese, however, *does not conjugate to person*, making this an incredibly easy language IMHO.

I also found that much of the pronunciation of Japanese was similar enough to Spanish that I had NO problem with the letter most non-native learners have the most problem with: the R. It's pronounced as if you are doing a single roll on a Spanish R, which is what occasionally makes it sound like an L.

And, if you choose Japanese, I might be able to not only brush up on but improve upon mine! *grin*

Yes, the lack of conjugation is very attractive, and I've always been pretty good at accents. The orthography is scaaaaary! Katakana, hirigana, KANJI? OoO あああああああああああ!!! I'm thinking that for entertainment purposes, however, this is the better choice against Russian. Looooots of anime and manga out there. ~_^

The benefit, however, is that most Nippon is originally taught using our alphabet. Then you learn katakana & hirigana, which are a lot easier than most people make them out to be. Kanji, on the other hand? I never got that far.

I do remember being able to understand small pieces of anime and being all kinds of proud of it, considering the speed of speech....

I'm not sure how RS does that for Japanese. The demo was in Turkish, and that language now uses a Latin-based alphabet. The programs seem to be designed to teach the languages independent of the student's native tongue, so I'm thinking that like with actual Japanese school children, it'll be taught with hirigana and then kanji. I'm starting to lean toward Japanese; I think I'll decide tomorrow.
