A Clash of Kings

So I finished listening to A Game of Thrones and am now getting well into A Clash of Kings. I thought the first book was marvelously read, and I doubt I would have had any good chance at following the plot if the narrator were not quite so talented. This second book is horribly read. The narrator while narrating sounds like proper "Queen's English" BBC1. He has a tendency to mispronounce things, like the names of Houses and simple words like lichen (he says "lich-en" not "liken"). The characters are voice-acted by the narrator, and he has a terrible range. Men and women alike are husky voiced, and all the Highborne sound like the mos' 'orribwe Cockney you evah 'eard. It's maddening, but I will suffer through the next 30 hours of this book... somehow. Book three goes back to the original narrator and I will welcome him with open ears.

<tantrum style=boy-king>NO!NO!NO! It's not acceptable. Your words are treason and I'll have your head on a spike!</tantrum>

I had to look in 5 different online sources to find where they wrote the other pronounciation, and found one only in the Miriam-Webster. I favour many things about the British, but litchen will not stand!

I just googled "lichen pronunciation" and the first site that came up was the Dictionary of English... I think the reason this sticks so much in my head is that I discussed it in one of my science classes (or maybe several, I took so many classes where it came up! The lichen, not the pronunciation of it...) with my classmates... It really is late for me though, and I need to sleep... so if my sentences aren't making sense... well... blame it on that...

I know... v_v I just recoil at the sound of it because my 7th grade Life Science teacher was adamant that it was pronounced "liken" and that anyone who said "litchen" was a diseducated fool. It doesn't sound right! Wah!

LOL It doesn't sound right to me either, but it *is* acceptable in Britain (at least). After I went to bed, I remembered the discussion where my professor of Plants & Society corrected us all on our pronunciation of fungi (not fun-guy, but funj-eye, never rhyming with algae), algae (not al-gay, but al-gee) and of course lichen (which we've already discussed). He was so adamant and pompous about the whole thing I went home and looked it all up to prove him wrong. Even if it was just for my own self-satisfaction. No one ever called him on it. Not even me. I'm such a chicken $#!+. Hehehe...
