She's a WINNER!
Now you can blow it all on taking your friends out to a swanky dinner...at Taco Bell!

very random topic but you're the only person still in Iowa I know
So... I have this friend who is in financial trouble. (not me or Jeff or probably anyone you know, but he does live in eastern Iowaish area - not entirely sure if it's Waterloo/CR/IC.) He's trying to file. I know you went through this and he's trying to do it before next month's deadline. Suggestions I can give him?

Re: very random topic but you're the only person still in Iowa I know
I just called around to a bunch of lawyers in the YP to get prices. It's $209 to file, and the lawyer adds his/her fee on top of that. There was the suggestion by mine to run a full 3-bureau report to make sure there are no creditors lying low. If you file and get discharged and find out that there's a creditor you missed, you're SOL. Also, a couple tricks my lawyer suggested, but that I couldn't use were to pay the lawyer fees with a credit card ;) and to pay off any amount possible on student loans with a credit card cash advance or other loan. I know there was some question on the filing as to if you'd paid more than $600 to a single creditor in X amount of time, but I don't remember since I was 6-months in default and I had no lines of credit open to me. I wasn't able to use either one. I suggest getting a lawyer who specializes in personal bankruptcy, and heed their advice. It is a wonderful feeling to be through with it, but an expert's opinion is the most useful.
