If you have the time you should drive down to the Springs and take the Cog Railway to the top of Pikes Peak. It's one of those "definitive Colorado" things. You can also drive up to the top, but August is a really bad time of year for that - you'd likely get stuck behind some terrified driver in an RV going 2mph (funny how 3,000 foot drop offs with no guard rails can make people nervous).

You could also drive to the top of Mount Evans (another "fourteener" west of Denver), but they don't have the gift shop with the funky high-altitude donuts. Not to mention restrooms.

Holy crap! You can see the curvature of the Earth in those photos!

And really... 30 feet can be as bad as 3000. ;)

We did the drive to the top in 96 or 97 in my Saturn. Yes, some parts of it are kind of scary, but it didn't bother me too much. What bugged me more were the idiots behind me on the way down who wanted to tailgate me while I was working to save my brakes.
